Rating the BEST Motorcycle Helmet Chin Mounts of 2022

You just got your new action camera and you need to mount it to your motorcycle helmet. As everyone knows, the chin is the best spot to mount it to. The problem with this area is that all helmet chin shapes are different so what's the best mount for you? Let's go over the 3 most common options and talk about the pros and cons of each.

In this we'll cover 4 properties and give each quality a rating out of 5 stars:

1.) Aesthetic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

2.) Quality ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3.) Functionality ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

4.) Price ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We'll go over 3 market dominant options;
-Telesin Strap Chin Mount
-MotoRadds FLEX Chin Mount
-3D Printed Chin Mount

First, let's go over each of the options, who makes them, where you can find them, and what you should know.

The TELESIN Strap Chin Mount is our first contender. One of the market leaders on Amazon and other direct-to-consumer websites. This is a product that we already have a bit of an issue with. You see, when we invented the original helmet chin mount, we were in the market alongside another "OG" of the moto mount world, SoPro Mounts. An American company that invented the strap mount and patented it. Unfortunately, TELESIN is a Chinese factory and company that basically came in with no regard for SoPro's intellectual property and knocked off and mass produced their design and sold it at prices that no American-made product could compete with. That said, this product floods the market everywhere because it's produced so largely and offered on wholesale sites like Alibaba, AliExpress, and so many more. So it's an important product to include here regardless of our own moral dilemmas of it. This product can be found nearly anywhere online.

MotoRadds FLEX Mount is our second contender in the lineup. We know, we know, "It's your product, you're gonna be biased." You're right, it is our product and maybe we will have a slight bias, but we're going to try and be as objective as possible and rate these on principle. If any of our points seem unfair, then call us out on it. We're open to listening. Since we know our market, we know what to look for in a perfect product and what features are best! Our mounts can be found on our website and on Amazon platforms globally.

3D Printed Mounts are our final contender. This is more of a general term, but there's really only two players in the actual business space of it. They are Chin Mounts and RideTech Moto. Both companies are outside the USA which affects how quickly they can ship and how much extra you have to pay for a product to cover shipping costs and in turn, may affect their score in our ranking system. They can still be lumped together as there really aren't any differences in their product, pricing, and customer service (warranty) policies. These can be found only on their own websites. Now, let's jump in!

Aesthetic

Helmets looks sexy, your mount should complement your helmet or, at the very least, not detract from the sleek design.

The TELESIN Strap Chin Mount is very much a function over form type of product. It doesn't focus on aesthetic quite as much as it focuses on just getting the job done. It's a bulky product that only comes in neon orange and neon blue options.  Although it's bulky, we do have to acknowledge the design of the product itself. It uses a lot of sharp edges and angles which really matches the style and feel of motorcycle riding. However, because of the bulkiness, it's hardly a product that will fully complement the sleek and sexy design of your Arai, ICON, HJC or Ruroc helmet. Now, all chin mounts have a base that must stick off the helmet and this is no exception. However, because their J hook attachment is molded into the product itself, it makes for design that protrudes further than many other products. Finally, it's size. This chin mount is very big and bulky and straps around the chin area and takes a lot of real estate. The result is a chin that looks like it's wrapped in some sort of helmet life vest and it really detracts from the slick look that sportbikers and other motorcyclists usually have when geared up. In terms of aesthetic, there's not much going for it, so we give this 3 out of 5 stars.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The MotoRadds Chin Mount does a great job of balancing form and function. This is our mount, but again, we're going to be as objective as we can. Being motorcyclists ourselves, we know that bikers appreciate the aesthetic and thought put into helmet design, so we try to make our chin mounts as discreet as possible. Right now, we only offer black and red color options but we found that these are the most complementary and discreet colors for most helmets. We went with a sleek and slim design that doesn't call attention to itself. Again, there does have to be a mounting hub for the camera, so in the center, you have a small piece of plastic protruding, but we made ours protrude as little as possible and we are working on adding various attachments that can be changed with a simple screwdriver to any piece depending on the mounting style you like. For aesthetic, we give this 4 out of 5 stars.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3D Printed Chin Mounts are all about function and don't consider aesthetic really at all. They stick out far off the helmet. They're blocky and bulky, and overall just look misplaced. Because they are 3D printed, they have the tell-tale plastic fibers of a home-printed product. Seeing a Shoei helmet with a 3D printed mount looks a bit like a Ferrari with a bumper made of Legos in someone's living room. It's a very rudimentary product, but it does get the job done. For aesthetic, we give this 2 out of 5 stars.

Quality

You worked hard for your money, make sure you're spending it on getting the best built product for yourself. You deserve it.

The TELESIN Strap Chin Mount comes in well-enough for quality. It's a combination of PVC, plastic, and textile straps. Given the price, the quality is about what you'd expect and while it won't last you for life, it will usually last long enough to justify your spend. For quality, we give this 4 out of 5 stars.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The MotoRadds FLEX Chin Mount is built with aerospace grade steel, strong injection molded polycarbonate, vibration dampening silicone, premium stainless steel screws, and utilizes genuine 3M adhesive tape. Because all of our products have a lifetime warranty, we need to make these built for life, otherwise, it costs us money. So we chose the strongest materials, the highest quality elastomers and plastics, and we used real, metal, screws to bring it all together. This is the type of buy-it-for-life product that all of our grandparents had. For quality, this comes in with a whopping 5 out of 5 stars.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3D Printed Chin Mounts come in lacking again, but this time, on quality. The thing with 3D printing is that you're taking several little strands of plastic and just putting them one on top of each other. This leaves a lot of porosity and overall lacks structural integrity. Think Legos. When you build something out of Legos, you have these very small spaces between the layers. It's the same with these 3D printed products, in fact,
3Dprint.com, a site whose tagline is, "The Voice of 3D Printing" even says, "The major disadvantage of [3D printed] products is their low quality and structural defects." Basically, with this porosity, the elements, air, water, dust, etc. seep into the mount and weaken an already weak product. We've had 3D print customers coming to us because their mounts will break just from normal wear and tear and then they have to spend another $35+ for a new one. So 3D printed mounts only get 2 out of 5 stars from us on this one.

Functionality

How well do these accomplish their intended goal? Find out here!

The TELESIN Strap Chin Mount is a bit of a mixed bag in functionality. Yes, it works and it gets the job done but it has some shortfalls. The first and most obvious shortfall is that it straps through your helmet chin area/visor closure area. because of this you can't close your visor all the way. So if you're on a moped/scooter, you're gonna be fine. You're generally not going to be hitting speeds that push a lot of wind to your face. However, if you're on any significantly sized bike and you're hitting freeway speeds, you're going to get whistles and wind coming through your helmet from the crack in the visor. The other shortfall is that this doesn't anchor directly to the helmet like other action camera mounts. It's simply strapped on and this results in it being a little wobbly and having a lot more play than those anchored on with adhesive. So functionality really depends on what you're riding, what helmet you're using, and what level of shake you're okay with. Since most of our readers are sportbike riders and hitting faster speeds, we're gonna focus on a score with that in mind. That said, given the issues it presents, we'll give this a 3 out of 5 stars.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The MotoRadds FLEX Chin Mount comes in quite well in functionality but has its own shortfalls. There are, however, a few good things. First, it is anchored directly to the helmet and it uses a vibration dampening silicone base. This makes for very steady footage and no camera shake or play. Secondly, because it's made of silicone with a thin, steel, core, it can be custom shaped to nearly any helmet. Now that's where the downfall comes into play. There's just a couple exceptions of helmets it won't work with. The most notable exceptions are AGV Pista and AGV Corsa helmet models. However, we have a specially designed chin mount for AGV helmets with sharp chin areas. It will also not accommodate a select few modular helmets that don't leave any chin space for a mount. Aside from those exclusions, it's the best universal chin mount on the market. So given it's minor exclusions but overall good functionality, we'll give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3D Printed Chin Mounts come in top rank for functionality. Again, these mounts have low aesthetic appeal and low overall build quality resulting in short lifespans, but when it comes to functionality, they do the job perfectly. They are anchored directly to the helmet with adhesive. However, because many of these, even established 3D mount companies, are printing out of their house and sourcing their tapes from sketchy wholesale websites, there's no guarantee they're using authentic 3M adhesive, so be aware of that. However, anchored down, and shaped to your helmet makes these a really good option. These get a 5 out of 5 stars for functionality.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

PRICE

Sometimes, the price of the mount isn't the only price you'll pay. If you settle for a low quality mount that breaks while riding, you may unexpectedly need to buy a new action camera.

The TELESIN Strap Chin Mount is unbeatable in price. Telesin owns their own factory in China which means they aren't wasting any expenses between third party factories and can sell direct to retailers and customers at rock bottom prices. Of course, you're not getting a lifetime warranty or a lifetime built product for that price, but if you're looking to save a couple bucks upfront, then that's your go to chin mount. Telesin gets 5 stars for pricing.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The MotoRadds FLEX Mount comes in close with Telesin. Our very first mounts in 2017 hit the market with a whopping $40 price tag. It was a product idea being self-funded by a cabinet shop worker and to get the cost for the molds paid off, $40 was the price-point we had to be at. The end goal always had been to use the funds to make better and better products and eventually get the price to one that is accessible to everyone. We value good products over profits. So now, the FLEX line starts as low as $14.99. This was the price-point needed to cover our production costs, labor costs, and potential lifetime warranty claims costs. With that price, we provide all the parts and pieces needed to mount and angle your camera perfectly. No extra accessories needed to be purchased separately like other products do. We feel it's a reasonable price and we hope our customers feel the same. Since we can't beat the lowest priced product, we give ourselves 4 out of 5 stars.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3D Printed Chin Mounts have varying price-points because there's so many hobbyists printing them, but the two most prominent players are Chin Mounts and RideTech Moto. Both of these companies are around the $35+ price-point out the door (unless you're in Canada). One has most of their mounts priced at $35 with free shipping to USA, the other is priced at $25 but after international shipping and additional pieces required to mount your camera, it comes out to $35+ out the door as well. This is a very high price-point for a product that offers no significant aesthetic, build quality, or warranty. These are being made with cheap printers and and cents worth of PLA print filament and they break quickly yet have no warranty. So why are they so expensive? Well, because you're paying for their influencers that are sending you their way. Their business model thrives on people getting paid to wear their product whereas influencers using MotoRadds, they're paying to use our product. As of the time writing this article. We do not pay any influencers. So DankWheelie, Jaret Campisi, and even MotoGP racers like Niccolo Canepa are using the products because they like them, not because they're getting paid to wear them. For 3D printed chin mounts, they get a 1 star out of 5.
